A great first result for the new kids on the block in the U14 Boys East II National League, as this is the first time that Hawks have entered a team at U14 National League level.
Something we have worked towards for over a year now and huge thanks goes to Shab parents and players for the efforts leading up to this game and the game itself.
This is the start of a 5 year journey (longer for Max and Haroon) and we got off to a flying start taking an early lead that we never relinquished. As we dominated the game with bigger players and strong teamwork Thurrock put on a full court pressure defence which caused us some issues initially but was the test the team really needed to find out very quickly where we stand in this league. Time outs and frank words were needed with the team but slowly and surely the boys worked out how to best break the press with heads up plays and good passing and moving which resulted in some superb 2 on 1 situation finishes.
All players had seen action on the court by the start of the second quarter and there was good contributions from all the squad which really helped to keep an aggressive and quick Hornets side at bay.
We continued playing at a good level and even with players having to sit with foul travel the importance of the squad and team togetherness was key with good performances and positive contributions throughout the team
The Hornets full court press continued throughout the game and occasionally caused us trouble and something to work on in the coming weeks, but we fought and we matched Hornets energy and passion and got the better of this match up with an emphatic score line.
The scoring was well spread throughout the team which is a good sign. But just as important as these statistics is rebounds assists, deflections, diving on loose balls helping on defence and changing shots and passes. Myself and Shab will be watching with keen interest for these areas of play.
Thanks again to all players for your effort and attention yesterday. Please stay focused at all times and be ready to help your team in whatever way you can.
A very satisfying result for our first outing.
