Nerves were running high for most of the players before tip of the first National League game of the season. This was probably down to the fact that not only was this most of the squads first ever National League appearance, we were also facing the current champions of the league. As we warmed up it became clear that this was going to be a hard game but the whole squad came together to compose themselves before we tipped off.
After the game tipped off Hawks gained possession and after moving the ball around it came to Josh Haddow who made a challenge 3 pointer to open the scoring of the game. After holding them to 5-5 they really took off, after some misjudged passes and some very slick play by the opposition we were down to 24-6. Despite this we kept high team morale and spirit and came to the half 24-74 down.
After some continual long range scoring and some relentless offense from number 10 in particular the opponents continued to thrive and flourish as they ran through their well-oiled plays. The Hawks gained some momentum towards end of the game as they came together as a team and could run the plays more efficiently and effectively. Matt Fleming continued to play well throughout the game using his size to his advantage and gaining points from not only driving to the basket but gaining wide open shots.
As the game closed out Coach Lee gave us the task of keeping them at under 131 points and scoring more than 40 points. After really coming out of our shells at the start of the 4th we exceeded expectations and closed out the opening game with team spirit high and raring to go for the game next week and the season ahead.
Well done everyone on a good first game which we can learn a lot from.
